How do medical staff decide who gets what type of care?

Each healthcare system around the world use different metrics and methodologies to determine which patients get what type of care. The NHS in the UK, for instance, use three metrics: age, frailty and underlying conditions.

Doctors coping with the coming peak of the coronavirus outbreak will have to “score” thousands of patients to decide who is suitable for intensive care treatment using a COVID-19 decision tool developed for the National Health Service.
